History
The medical studies in English in the Medical Faculty in Pilsen started in 1992, following 47 years of teaching solely in Czech language. In that time only a few international students were enrolled in our faculty. Years passed by and the number of students started growing, with people coming from various countries all over the globe.
With the increase in the number of students, what was once a small community became a larger and heterogeneous group of people speaking different languages and having different cultural backgrounds. Wishing to facilitate and improve communication between these students and the world, the first ideas regarding the creation of a students' association appeared in 2005.
Given that the number of people coming to join our faculty was still increasing, the above mentioned idea naturally jumped from the minds of some students to become a reality - so was founded ISMAP (International Students Medical Association in Pilsen). This happened in the first quarter of 2007, as a consequence of the work and strugle of a group of students headed by Luis Miguel Paulo, who was the founder and first president of ISMAP. At the same time, efforts were made to turn the newly founded association official, this was achieved with the conclusion of our legal constitution and official presentation on the 10th May 2007.
When forming ISMAP, several aims were taken into acount:
- bringing people together, including students, medical and academic staff as well as the city community;
- helping with the integration of students within the the academic and social world;
- supporting students during their formation as doctors and people;
- ...
To accomplish all this, several Subcommittees were built, each one with different specific roles in order to better complete those general aims.
When we first met as ISMAP members, we didnt have much more other than our will and energy to succeed in our objectives. Since those times, many steps were taken and a few milestones were achieved.
The first, already mentioned, was ISMAP's official presentation to the students and to the academic and medical staff. Another important step was the completion of this website, which in this technological era is of an upmost importance in the interaction between ourselves and the world. Other achievements were carried out by the several Subcommittes, such as:
- finding sponsors and partnerships to help support our association;
- gathering numerous study notes and information to help the students in their academic careers;
- promulgating international conferences and meetings;
- publicizing projects and research activities currently undergoing in our faculty;
- helping out in child supporting institutions and people in need;
- handling and advertising various cultural activities going on and around Pilsen;
- organizing discussion groups, sport events and student parties, to facilitate the social integration of the students.
